Worried, Mrs. Fields and her son went to Lauren's apartment in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and were met by a note on the door, that read, "If you're looking for Lauren, call this number".
Mrs. Fields began panicking as she called the number. Soon, the landlord of Lauren's apartment came downstairs.
"I started panicking," she said, while holding her tears back. "All I could do was just stand there, like if I was frozen. I could not believe what he was telling me, that my baby was gone."
Lauren Smith Fields, had been found dead in her apartment complex, the day before by the Bridgeport police. The police department had not informed her family, about Lauren's death, at any time.
The landlord of the apartment gave Mrs. Fields and her son a phone number for a detective, who told her son during a phone call, that Ms. Smith-Fields, 23, had went on a Bumble date with an older white man, before she died. However, the detective gave them very little information which caused, Mrs Fields to hang up the phone.
The family had to beg the detective to collect evidence that was found in the apartment, a representative for the family said. The detective also told the family to not worry about the man who had been there, the night Lauren died, because he was "a really nice guy," Mrs. Fields had stated.
The man, who we have decided NOT TO NAME because he has not been charged with a crime, spoke to the police when they arrived on the scene on December 12th, the day Ms. Smith-Fields was officially, pronounced dead.
The mans lawyer said that he has cooperated with the police that day and declined to comment further.
Lauren Smith-Fields graduated from Stamford High School, and was a current student at Norwalk Community College, studying physical therapy. She was also very active on social media, posting about lifestyle.
Weeks had passed without any updates about the case from authorities.
On Sunday, which would have been her 24th birthday, the family were joined by members of the community, as they all marched to the mayor's office, demanding something be done. Everyone in the march had a cake and released balloons into the air.
Following the march, the mayor made his first remarks about the ongoing case. He said, “Death notifications should be done in a manner that illustrates dignity for the deceased and respect and compassion for the family.”
The family did say that they plan to sue him and the Bridgeport police department.
